Preventing Childhood Injury and Death in Bangladesh

August 10, 2023

3 children die every hour in Bangladesh from accidental injuries, including drowning, burns, electrocution and in road traffic.

These tragedies leave behind heartbreak and broken families. Our research has shown a lack of awareness of what causes injuries, along with a fatalistic attitude that injuries are inevitable, severely exacerbates the problems.

Women and Children First, with our partners BADAS-PCP and UCL, adapted community groups to address the issue. The findings show incredible potential for them to work.

In Malawi, teenage girls and young women are vulnerable to a variety of sexual and reproductive health issues.

Societal expectations, harmful myths around contraception and difficulty reaching vital health services form barriers. These affect their ability to prevent or delay pregnancy, impacting their ability to have rich, fulfilling lives.

With Women and Children First and our partners, MaiKhanda Trust and Farm Radio Trust, they are being supported through innovative, inspirational radio programmes.

Establishing Essential Sexual Health Groups via Kenyan Clinics

In Kenya 3 out of 20 teenagers will become pregnant. They want to avoid pregnancy but lack the knowledge and ability to make informed decisions.

Alongside our partners, Women and Children First is establishing new groups to support adolescent girls with knowledge and skills to improve their sexual and reproductive health.

After 10 years at Women and Children First, Chief Executive Mikey Rosato will be stepping down from his role at the end of June.

The Board of Trustees has appointed current Deputy Chief Executive, Beth Silver, to role of Chief Executive, taking up the new role on July 1st, 2023.

How Radio Can Support Girls to Take Control Over Their Health

Women and Children First is working with local partners, including MaiKhanda Trust, Farm Radio Trust, Farm Radio International, CODE and MSI Reproductive Choices to dismantle barriers to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for adolescent girls and young women in Malawi. 

The project is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.
